Trigonella foenum-graecum L. (Leguminosae) and Datura metel Linn are known for its anti-ulcer, anti-inflammatory activities and to treat various pain-related physiological conditions and are used in folk medicines. In the present study, we attempted to verify and compare the analgesic effects of both the extracts.Three experimental models were used (acetic acid, formalin, and hot-plate tests) in order to characterize the analgesic effect. The extracts significantly reduced the pain induced by intraperitoneal injection of acetic acid. In the formalin test, the fenugreek extract significantly reduced the painful stimulus. In acetic acid writhing test, fenugreek performed well however in hot plate test Datura performed better. These results suggest that the compounds present in the extracts activated both central and peripheral mechanisms to elicit the analgesic effect.
